Acer Aspire One joins the race

Acer Aspire One

It looks like every vendor and his dog is jumping onto the UMPC bandwagon. The latest company to announce a foray into the sub-notebook world is Acer. The Aspire One, dubbed a ‘netbook’, is Acer’s answer to the Asus Eee PC. There is some speculation that Acer’s entry into the the market is attempt to boost flagging sales but right now we’ll forget that and look at the specifications.

Due to be the released 10th July 2008, the device features the following:

  • Linux/Windows XP OS
  • 8Gb SSD (Linux model)/80Gb platter disk (Windows model)
  • WiFi
  • Intel Atom CPU - 1.6Ghz
  • 512Mb RAM
  • 8.9″ screen - 1024×600

Prices range from £199 for the Linux/8Gb SSD model to £249 for the Windows XP/80Gb variant. Following the initial launch, two more versions are expected to follow - 3G and WiMax although the 3G variant will likely be sold by mobile operators.
