News of the new TouchSmart Notebook PC from HP was announced recently (in Las Vegas on 6th Jan. to be exact). So what can we expect to see? From the paper specifications, it’s looks pretty good and we’re sure they will be a whole raft of reviews in the near future as laptop enthusiasts get their hands on this new HP offering.

Two mobility flavours got their first airing: The HP TouchSmart tm2 and the seemingly powerful, touch-screen and a few netbooks in the form of the HP Mini 5102, 210 and 2102.

The HP TouchSmart tm2, a thin yet powerful computer, is being touted as the first convertible consumer notebook to carry multitouch technology. Whilst we agree that it probably is, how well will it go down? Only time will tell. The main point for HP is that they get first mover advantage even if it is crap!

Like standard notebooks, the tm2 has the usual keyboard and screen (I don’t think we’re quite ready for a device that requires no typing whatsoever) but also accepts input via the touch-enabled display. The tm2 converts into a slate (still waiting for the iSlate…) which HP reckons will provide students and artists with a great way of doodling and scribbling notes (plus the ‘power of suggestion’ will no doubt be great for profit margins).

The 5102 netbook is HP’s first jump into the touch-enabled netbook market and is primarily aimed at students and mobile workers. The 5102 comes in a range of colours, from the industry standard black to red and blue.

One of the interesting features of the 5102 is the face recognition technology which allows users to login to Windows using only the power of their big, ugly mug! Great idea but will it work after 10 pints of beer, a waist line blasting curry and a good old fashioned punch up at the end of the night?

Here’s a quick round up of the specs:

HP Mini 5102.

2.6 pounds, available in both standard and touch-enabled flavours and powered by the Intel Atom. HP claim a battery life of 10 hours but we wonder how much juice you’ll really get out of the 5102 once you start watching 720 and 1,080-pixel DVD’s on it.

HP Mini 210 / HP Mini 2102

Again, HP give the 2102 an excellent battery life of 9 hours plus the option to throw 3G broadband connectivity and GPS into the bundle.

The netbook isn’t the lightest option on the market but is relatively light at 2.69 pounds and is only about 1-inch thin. Comes in black crystal, silver crystal, Pacific blue and Sonoma Red coluours.

As usual, HP have thought about the design and usability by cramming in a keyboard that’s 92 per cent of a full sized option. Then there’s all the other bits you can’t do without: built-in WLAN, webcam and microphone and an Intel Atom N450 processor (1.66 GHz).

Big hit or flop? Knowing HP’s excellent name they’re sure to do well but would you an artist really go out and buy the 5102 when a piece of paper works just as well?

HP have been pretty busy in the netbook space; offerings such as the 2133 and 2140 have been around for some time now and, whilst they’re fairly pricey, bring the sort of solid reliability you expect from the guys at Hewlett Packard. The almost bottomless pit of HP netbooks has been further extended with the new Mini 311 and Mini 110.

The 311 comes with very generous 11.6″ screen and Nvidia’s ION graphics platform - not the first to use this graphics technology but it’s certainly a welcome addition for anyone wanting that little bit more out of their display. Powered by Intel’s Atom CPU, this netbook will be available with either Windows XP or Windows 7 (you’ll have to wait until after 22nd Oct for the latter option) in either black and white. All this for about $399 - not bad considering the price tags seen on some of HP’s earlier models. Other components include an Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, 160GB hard disk plus a six-cell battery.

The mini 110

The mini 110 comes with what most would consider to be fairly standard netbook components: Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP and a 160GB HDD. Nothing spectacular but you get what you pay for (about £279 in the UK). HP also give you an optional ‘hardware video decoder’ which gives improved HD video playback.

A new, and interesting, touch offered by HP is the inclusion of a piece of third-party software called Syncables; this lets you connect to different machines on your home/local network and then share share docs, photos, video and music, and even sync certain types of email client (Outlook and Thunderbird) with a simple click of the mouse buttons.

If you want full specs take a look at HP’s sites for more info on the mini 311 and mini 110 netbooks.

Although netbooks have proven to be very popular one of the biggest complaints is the ability to upgrade the SSD’s found in many of the models. Most manufacturers have proprietary connectors which force owners into a corner. For any of you that own a netbook, it would be fair to say that they’re happy to buy only manufacturer certified components when upgrading. There is one issue; price. Proprietary usually means a higher price tag. I know this isn’t always the case, so don’t start shouting. If, like me, you have a number of spare disks lying around you’ll know how frustrating it can be when you find that old drive from your Eee PC doesn’t simply plugin to your Acer netbook.

Upgraders, your SSD upgrade headaches could soon be over. The SATA International Organization have launched a long overdue connector standard for laptop and netbook makers during the the Intel Developer Forum, today.

This new standard will be called mini-SATA (mSATA if you want to sound really cool in front of you boss/wife/friends). The standard will use the same Mini PCI Express connector as many existing PCIe SSDs but current developments suggest the standard will be used for SSD’s of 64GB and smaller.

Transfer rates up to 3Gb/s will be supported by mSATA. A number of big names have added their backing to mSATA (Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, HP, SANDisk)so there’s a very good chance it will become a universal standard in a relatively short space of time and Toshiba have announced that their 30GB and 62GB SSD’s will support speeds of 180Mbps (read) and 50Mbps (write). All good news for anyone that wants to carry out their own upgrades now all we need is to see the standard connector support hitting our local computer stores.

Okay, you probably won’t be surprised to hear the Packard Bell would joining the ranks of network manufacturers with the launch of the m/u (or ‘moo’ as some observers are calling it). Apparently, and in the words of Packard bell themselves, this new netbook one very appealing feature - it has the performance of a notebook. So what does that mean? Well, some of industry analysts are saying that he could simply be a, err, very small notebook!

Anyway, enough of the guessing, let’s take a look at what the moo has to offer:

For a start it’s incredibly small and very light at just over 3 pounds although it does have a pretty impressive 11.6 inch screen (much bigger than most of the traditional netbooks currently on the market). In terms of performance there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of information about the processor but we do know that it’s running an unspecified Intel ULV CPU and packs a rather hefty 4 GB of RAM. There’s plenty of storage available as the m/u comes with a hard drive of up to 500 GB in size. There is also a multi touch trackpad plus a 5-in-1 memory card reader. A point to note for all you ‘huge fans of Microsoft Vista’ - the m/u will come with Windows 7 Home Premium installed as the default OS. This netbook also comes with two colour options: red or black. Sure, it’s quite limited but still better than a choice of “white only”!

Pricing isn’t too bad either - figures of about £399 are currently being quoted although the only downside to this you will have to wait for the official launch of windows 7 befor you can get your hands on it for. Ah well, certainly looks like it could be worth the wait for the new Packard bell m/u.

It seems we may soon see a netbook being launched by Nokia, according the India Times. Apparently, the Mobile phone giant has been watching the netbook markets with a very keen eye (yet another company that has our ‘best interests’ at heart) with a suggestion that they are going to enter the mobile computing market. “Dates, gimme dates!” - we don’t have any. Nokia are keeping tit lipped on this news and there doesn’t seem to be much info floating around the wonderful world of the internet right now so we’ll just have to wait and see.

When you look at it, the announcement would seem pretty logical. Aside from the potentially massive profits, Nokia could build a pretty good netbook as their NOkia N97 mobile phone pretty much has all the features of a very small computer (Nokia have even ventured so far as to call the N97 a “mobile computer”). Sure, they aren’t a well known computer manufacturer but they all had to start somewhere.

One area where a Nokia netbook could excel is in the builtin support for 3G functionality - you’d be hard pressed to find another company that knows more about this than Nokia. Their relatively early entry into a market where manufacturers are starting to off 3G services in their netbooks could be very profitable for Nokia.

That’s pretty much it, for now. We can only wait to see what’s on the horizon but for now we can only guess that Nokia will, hopefully, use the Maemo OS seen on their tablets as the OS installation - very nice.

…if you really want it! Yeah, you heard right - Microsoft and Nokia have announced a collaboration which will see users getting the option of running MS’s Office software on a range of mobile devices.

The announcement means that, in the near future, Microsoft’s productivity suite will be available on a range of Nokia’s Symbian based devices - I’m not sure how this fits in with Redmonds Open Source views..a profit is a profit, I guess! From the outset, this offering will be made available to a wide range of Nokia smartphones, starting with the Nokia Eseries.

The announcement allows Microsoft to expand their Microsoft Office Mobile offerings to a potential market of around 200 million devices. Business users seem likely to be the primary target as MS attempts to make up for recent losses but you can bet your bottom dollar that everyday users will soon be able to join the ‘party’.

Nokia smartphones should start to ship with Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile early next year with a raft of other Office apps and services following in the wake. These will include:

OCM (Office Communicator Mobile) - MS’s Enterprise instant messaging and presence suite

Access to corporate intranet and extranet portals built on Microsoft SharePoint Server

Centralised management of devices using Microsofts SCCM software

For any of you thinking that Redmond is finally going soft on Open Source software, don’t be fooled. Sure, they have offered up some code for inclusion in the Linux kernel but that doesn’t mean they are ‘embracing’ their competitors. At the end of the day, this is about profit and any company that wants to survive needs to look at partners, no matter who they are.

If you haven’t heard of the Crunchpad, it’s the brainchild of Michael Arrington and his team over at TechCrunh. Originally designed to be an ultra lightweight tablet, the Crunchpad does away with traditional disk based storage in favour of saving your files to the ‘cloud’ via a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. The lightweight tag seems to have gone out of the window with reported being around 2.6 lbs (about 1.8Kg) which makes it slightly heavier than Asus’s stunning offering, the Eee PC 1005 HA. Another aspect that made our eyes water is the price; around $399. Now, that is not a high price tag for a mobile device but there are many more options out there that are far cheaper and they have built in storage (personally, I’m not ready to throw caution to the wind and let someone else hold, and potentially view, all my data).

A number of analysts have questioned the inclusion of 3G support in the Crunchpad. Sure, it’s adds to the price and most users have Wi-Fi at home but this feature allows it to be used almost anywhere. A big thumbs up in my eyes.

A major stumbling block for Arrington and co. comes in the form of Apple. Rumours abound that they will be releasing some form of ultra mobile device in the near future (possibley a beefed up, and enlarged, version of of the iPod Touch). Would this stall the adoption of the Crunchpad? Almost definitely. Apple is the current darling of the computing generation and buyers seem to hanging on the word of every new release from Apple. Rumours about Apples entry into the netbook market don’t go unnoticed, or unheeded. Whilst I’m by no means an Apple ‘fanboy’, given the choice, I know which option I’d take.

Pretty much all of the major ISP’s offer you a ‘free’ netbook when you sign up for broadband services so it’s no surprise that Virgin Media has jumped on the bandwagon. Virgins offering, the Freedom, will be offered up to subscribers who sign up for lengthy fixed and mobile broadband deals. So, is theere anything special about this netbook?

As you can from the image below, the Virgin Media Freedom netbook looks fairly attractive - red or black finish. ‘I don’t care what it looks like!’ Sure, neither do we. For most users, functionality is everything and the Freedom certainly gives as good as any other netbook: Intel Atom 1.60GHz processor, 10.2–inch screen, Windows XP and 1GB of RAM. The HDD is only 120GB HDD but, to be honest, if you really need to store that much data would you really rely on a standard laptop disk?

As you’d expect, there’s Wi–Fi connecitivity. The main thing that lets this offering down is the battery life - two and a half hours! Pretty poor. Now that hardly does its cred any good when most netbooks can squeeze out almost double that.

The Asus Eee Keyboard has been doing the rounds since about January but there’s now a firm releas date: August 09. For any of you living in a cave, here’s a some info on this curious piece of hardware. The Eee PC Keyboard is built from the guts of an Asus Eee PC netbook computer and housed in a keyboard. Pretty simple, eh? It does have a particularly nice touch - you don’t need a monitor. There is a touch screen on the right hand side rather than a screen at the top.

The idea behind the keyboard is that, rather than hooking up to your PC, you will connected via wireless to a HDTV. You can then control the television using the touch screen. Pretty cool.

Eee Keyboard Specs

So now you know what it does, you’ll want to know about the hardware, right? Considering it has been designed as a form of remote control it’s actually pretty powerful. Inside you’ll find the Intel Atom N280 1.66 Ghz processor, a 23Gb SSD (solid state hard disk) and a battery. On the right hand side of the external panel there’s a 5 inch touch screen (resolution of 800 x 480 pixels). Now if you decide you don’t want to connect to your TV you have the option of using the keyboard as a PDA although I’m not sure how you’ll fit that in your pocket.

The only negative point we can see from the specs is the memory: it’s hardwired so you, unless you pretty handy with a soldering iron, there’s not much chance of slapping an extra couple of Gb’s in!

Either way, as a reminder of the way life was with the Amiga and Commodore 64, the Eee Keyboard PC will prove to be a very interesting model to be included in the Asus line.

Want to install Ubuntu on you Eee PC netbook? The Asus range of netbooks has a pretty loyal following but many users simply aren’t happy with the UI that comes as default. Being an Ubuntu fan, and an Eee PC 1000 owner, I’ve been looking for a simple way to install Ubuntu. The lack of CD/DVD on the Eee 1000 has certainly not helped. If you’ve similar problems I’ve got the answer - Easy Peasy - an Ubuntu distro designed specifically for the Eee range.

If you don’t want to wade through all of the Easy Peasy documentation you can take a look at this tutorial: Install Ubuntu on the Eee PC - it’s simple to follow and should have you up and runningin no time at all (ok, the install process is slow…RTFM!)

The current version, 1.1, is not without bugs but you’ll find a huge FAQ with answers to most of the problems seen by users. On a personal not, I did have a few minor bugs but these were quickly rectified with the help of the user community. Anyway, what are you waiting for? Go and try out Ubuntu on your Eee PC - I love and I think you will too.
