Elonex OneTWe’ve picked up some news regarding the launch of a new Elonex device; the OneT.

The Elonex OneT will come with a price tag of £129 plus £10 for postage and packaging.

At the moment, specifications are a bit hazy (in particular the processor) but The Register has provided some information regarding the general style and features.

Here’s what we have so far:

  • 7in, 800 x 480 display
  • 1GB of solid-state storage
  • SD card slot
  • 802.11b/g Wi-Fi
  • VGA output
  • 3 x USB 2.0 ports.

The OneT is 210 x 140 x 30mm and weighs 625g with the three-hour battery life. Another variant, the One T+, comes with 2GB of storage.

OK, I’ll go out on a limb and offer my own predictions, noting only the differences.

    336 MHz Ingenic Jz4730 cpu
    128KB RAM
    3 x USB 1.1, not 2.0, ports
    64K colors, not 16M or 256K
    no VGA output
    no SDHC, SD only
    webcam

I wouldn’t like to pay more than 60 quid for a mini laptop like this.

Nor me. Probably better off going for something like an MSI Wind - pricey but miles ahead of the Elonex.

I meant 128 MB RAM, let’s not make it even more minimalist than it already is.

In Germany you can get a 1 GHz VIA C7M + 512 MB RAM laptop for 199 euro (158 quid) and it seems in France you now can get an EEEPC 4G for the same amount of money.

That’s 4x RAM, 2x flash (on the 4G) and at least 3x more cpu performance for less than 1.6x of the price (assuming it will cost at least 100 quid).

Hmm, somehow I don’t think we’ll see prices as low as that in the UK :(

Well, you can alway buy the Silver Star clone with only 512 MB flash for 149.99 quid, also completely ridiculous when the price of flash has fallen htru the floor and ultra cheap MP4 players have 4 GB standard now.

Hmm, I feel some hardware hacking coming on!

Maybe hardware hacking won’t be needed.

It’s only a matter of time before Bluetooth and WiFi will be added to Ainol V3000 (4.3″ LTPS screen with 800×480 pixels) clones, the switch to Linux will be made and the Chinese MP4 players will have turned into spectacularly cheap UMPCs.

You can already get a 90 dollar MP4 player (Onda VX777+) with the better and faster Ingenic Jz4740, 4 GB flash, TV out and touchscreen: features strangely missing on the 180+ dollar Skytone, Silver Star, Elonex, Bestlink…

I forgot a few other features: 256K colors, USB 2.0 High Speed and 32 GB SDHC….
