Netbook SSDs get a standard connector

Universal SATA connectors for SSD’s

Although netbooks have proven to be very popular one of the biggest complaints is the ability to upgrade the SSD’s found in many of the models. Most manufacturers have proprietary connectors which force owners into a corner. For any of you that own a netbook, it would be fair to say that they’re happy to buy only manufacturer certified components when upgrading. There is one issue; price. Proprietary usually means a higher price tag. I know this isn’t always the case, so don’t start shouting. If, like me, you have a number of spare disks lying around you’ll know how frustrating it can be when you find that old drive from your Eee PC doesn’t simply plugin to your Acer netbook. (more…)

Make way for the PB m/u

Okay, you probably won’t be surprised to hear the Packard Bell would joining the ranks of network manufacturers with the launch of the m/u (or ‘moo’ as some observers are calling it). Apparently, and in the words of Packard bell themselves, this new netbook one very appealing feature - it has the performance of a notebook. So what does that mean? Well, some of industry analysts are saying that he could simply be a, err, very small notebook! (more…)

MS Office goodness for you Symbian device…

…if you really want it! Yeah, you heard right - Microsoft and Nokia have announced a collaboration which will see users getting the option of running MS’s Office software on a range of mobile devices.

The announcement means that, in the near future, Microsoft’s productivity suite will be available on a range of Nokia’s Symbian based devices - I’m not sure how this fits in with Redmonds Open Source views..a profit is a profit, I guess! From the outset, this offering will be made available to a wide range of Nokia smartphones, starting with the Nokia Eseries. (more…)

Crunchpad Specs are Revealed

Crunchpad Specs are out

  • Dimensions: 12.8 by 7.8 by 0.7 inches (approx)
  • Weight: 2.6 pounds
  • 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB memory
  • Open-source Webkit browser/operating system (courtesy of Fusion Garage)
  • One USB port
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G, mobile broadband

If you haven’t heard of the Crunchpad, it’s the brainchild of Michael Arrington and his team over at TechCrunh. Originally designed to be an ultra lightweight tablet, the Crunchpad does away with traditional disk based storage in favour of saving your files to the ‘cloud’ via a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. The lightweight tag seems to have gone out of the window with reported being around 2.6 lbs (about 1.8Kg) which makes it slightly heavier than Asus’s stunning offering, the Eee PC 1005 HA. Another aspect that made our eyes water is the price; around $399. Now, that is not a high price tag for a mobile device but there are many more options out there that are far cheaper and they have built in storage (personally, I’m not ready to throw caution to the wind and let someone else hold, and potentially view, all my data). Virgin Netbook is coming

Pretty much all of the major ISP’s offer you a ‘free’ netbook when you sign up for broadband services so it’s no surprise that Virgin Media has jumped on the bandwagon. Virgins offering, the Freedom, will be offered up to subscribers who sign up for lengthy fixed and mobile broadband deals. So, is theere anything special about this netbook? (more…)

Watch out Apple, here comes xpPhone!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 |

Ok, first off, I’m not a huge Windows fan as most of my work is done on a Linux laptop but, from time to time, I do use Windows. But not Vista. Both of my doze PC’s are running XP for the simple reason that it works without eating memory/asking me a question every time I click an icon!

In my opinion, Microsoft rushed Vista out to the masses just so that they could have a replacement for the aging XP OS but put little thought into what users want.

Ubuntu takes a nibble at Netbooks

At last, the latest version of Ubuntu Linux features a new “Netbook Remix” ready made for mini genre of notebooks!. The new release, known as “Jaunty Jackalope,” continues Ubuntu’s steady growth with some slick new features, much awaited speed and stability improvements.

The “Netbook Remix” is the latest addition to Ubuntu’s OS family and delivers a stripped down OS that has been optimised for the relatively limited capabilities of netbooks i.e. smaller screens and lower hardware specs.

Dual Core Atoms ready to ship

Intel Atom CPU

The good news is that Intel are finally ready to ship the Dual Core Atom. The question is ‘How long will it take netbook builders to use the chip?’ I’d say we’ll see the latest netbooks, UMPC’s etc running on a Dual Core Atom in time for Christmas. Disagree with me? Look at it this way, what better time for a manufacturer to release high end ultra mobile device? Think of all those people looking for Christmas presents for their gadget-hugging loved ones (P.S I love gadgets!)

The new Atom, named the 330, is just 45-nanometer big and has the same 1.6GHz bus speed like the single core version. For your money, you’ll get 1MB of level 2 cache and will support for DDR2 667 memory.

My moneys on either Asus or Dell being first out of the door with a dual core Atom based netbook

Aldi to ship MSI Wind based netbook

Thursday, June 26th, 2008 |

Medion AkoyaFirst things first. I love Aldi. It’s provided me with cheap, tasty German food for years now. On top of that, I’ve bought a range of computer related gadgets from the German low-cost store and most of them have been outstading value for money. (I admit there were a few duds but those seem to be long gone).

So, what has this got to do with the MSI Wind? I was checking up some news and I found this article. Basically, the article outlines the specifications of soon to be released Median Akoya (MSI Wind based netbook). The Akoya will ship with the following:

  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • 80GB platter disk
  • 1Gb of RAM
  • Corel WordPerfect

The Akoya will be on sale from the 3rd July. All this for just 399 Euro. Bet you can’t wait? Oh, there is one problem; if you want a Medion Akoya on the day you’ll have to travel to Aldi South in Germany!

Blankets on the sunbed, anyone?
