MSI X-Slim X320 gets US green light

Back in January, we did a small post about drool-worthy the MSI X-Slim X320 netbook. It’s good looking that we actually had a competition in the office to decide which is better looking - the netbook or the rather lovely lady modelling it! The X320 won hands down. Anyway, good new - for the US market, at least - the X-Slim X320 is now ready to ship. American customers can pick it up for only $599 (the netbook, that is).

MSI X320…

…it’s gorgeous!

The war for the netbook high ground just got seriously hot with the release of some images showing the MSI X320 in all its glory. Apart from having some pretty impressive specs, the X320 is a pretty stunning example of what can be done with an ultra mobile device…

MSI X320

The X-Slim 320 is not the smallest of netbooks - the 13.4 inch screen makes it the bigges netbook so far! The 320 measures a miniscule 1.98cm and about 2.87 pounds and comes with either a 4 or 8 cell battery that, allegedly, lasts up to 10 hours. MSI haven’t given out the specs with their press release but Engadget Chinese report that it’s running on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 1366 x 768 resolution and up to 2GB DDR2 RAM. All the usual bits are included such as 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, 3.5G network card, three USB ports, an Ethernet port, VGA output, and an all-in-one card reader. Interestingly Crave are suggesting that the X320 might feature the NVIDIA Ion platform. Now that would be worth buying.

The X320 is due to hit the beaches in the second quarter of 2009 with a price tag of around $800 - if it features all the specs above, in particular Ion, this could well be one of the best netbooks on the market to date.

MSI Wind 2

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 |

The Wind hasn’t been around for that long but the latest news shows that MSI are keen to dig even deeper into the lucrative netbook market. The folks over at EnGadget have posted an article which suggests that the Wind U120 will be arriving in November. On top of that, the U100 will soon be available from a “large national retailer,” - no specifics here as yet. And, as you’d expect, the Wind U120 (Wind 2 as it’s been called) will hit the US first - you’d never believe they used to be one of OUR colonies ;).

Director of US sales for MSI has stated that the Wind 2 will feature “a whole new look,”. Some of the specs already in the wild include new HDD / SSD options and inbuilt 3.5G WWAN connectivity for under $600. There’s no news on a UK price yet but I reckon it’ll come in at around £450 (based on the specs we already know).

Yesterday we posted an article regarding the forthcoming Eee PC S101 which should make a formidable sparring partner for MSI.

MSI U100-6B102/ U100-6B106 Notebook

Thursday, September 11th, 2008 |

It looks like MSI Korea are going at the netbook market yet again although I’m not sure where these new devices fit in. Officically, U100-6B102 and U100-6B106 are notebooks but, once again, it’s getting pretty close to blurring the distinction between netbook and notebook.

The two new MSI devices are in reality upgraded versions of U100 laptops. New features include increased battery life (with 6-cell battery) and a pretty decent storage capacity. Bluetooth capabilities come as standard on both computers and they also support 802.11n.

The 120GB U100-6B102 model is scheduled to be in stores by mid-September. The 160 GB U100-6B106 has been available for sale since 9 September. A real bonus for anyone that likes to be picky; there are three colours to choose from options: White, Black or pink.

No screenshots yet, I’ll find some and update soon.

MSI Wind

The success of the Wind has prompted manufacturers MSI to launch a new edition; the MSI Wind Love edition. The difference here is that the Love is designed to support notebook donation programmes - free Love for all the world!.

The MSI Wind Love will come in the following colours: tans, bright silver and shining gold hearts pattern on a pure white.

Charitable donations will take place in Taiwan, China, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and India. The idea is to give poor children a chance to learn how to use computers and keep up with the modern world.

LG/MSI Netbook coming your way

Thursday, July 24th, 2008 |

LG X110Ok, so MSI have done pretty well with the MSI Wind. Naturally, you’d expect them to be preparing for the launch of another device - they are. But all is not quite as it seems. MSI are building a netbook for LG!

LG’s name has been synonymous with the mobile phone market until now. LG and MSI will be working together to produce the LG X110 netbook but don’t expect this to be cheap. The X110 has a price rumoured to be about $625 - $790 - no cheap by any standards.

The LG X110 netbook is expected to have the following specifications when it ships:

  • 8.9-inch screen
  • 2GB memory
  • 120GB hard drive
  • Windows XP -  no news on a Linux variant yet.

I can understand any company wanting to join the UMPC/MID/netbook party but I’m sure the price could be a little lower - the whole idea behind this market is one of low cost!
