Lenovo S12: Nvidia Ion Inside.

Nvidia Ion powered goodness!

A little while ago we had an article about the Nvidia Ion platform and we lamented the lack of any decent graphics card in our ultra mobile gadgets.

Lenovo have answered the rallying call by delivering the Ion powered IdeaPad S12. Ok, I have my gripes; at 12 inches I wouldn’t really class this as a true netbook (in fact, Intel and Microsoft are working on plans to restrict the upper screen size limit of devices running ‘Doze 7!)

Basically, you get all the benefits of ultra mobile computing but with the ability to play HD and do some serious gaming all for about $500 (no UK prices yet).

Lenovo X300 notebook

Lenovo X300 Thinkpad

The Lenovo X300 was released earlier this and received rave reviews from users in the notebook community. Lenovo have now up the ante by making audio quality a key area of the X300’s performance. It has to be said, that, over the years many manufacturers have pretty much disregarded this area. By incorporating ARC Sonic Focus™ software Lenovo is seeking to appeal to mobile users with a taste for high quality audio. Sonic Focus has been designed to roll back the years of abuse that movies and music have suffered through the digitisation process. Ultra portable with high quality audio - I’m up for that.

The X300, which was launched under the banner of an ‘Ultraportable Notebook PC’ - think ‘fat netbook’ represented Lenovo’s entry into the netbook market. The sights have been set firmly on the MacBook Air and Toshiba’s Protege R500. If you haven’t seen the Lenovo’s specs, here you go:

  • Processor-1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL7100
  • Memory-2GB of 667MHz
  • 64GB solid-state hard drive
  • Graphics-Intel GMA X3100 (integrated)
  • Windows Vista - you’re going to need all of the memory!
  • Dimensions (WDH)-12.5 x 9.1 x 0.73 inches
  • 13.3″ screen
  • weight 3.4 pounds

Since the sell off, have been picking up the pace in terms of building beautiful, lightweight notebooks and UMPC’s - the X300 is definitely no exception, lovely!

Lenovo wants to take over the world!

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 |

Not content with building and selling laptops, PC’s, UMPC’s and netbooks, Lenovo has decided to dig into another market sector. The Lenovo P960 mobile phone features…a fingerprint scanner! No, really. Here’s what MobileWhack had to say:

“We might find many laptops packing a fingerprint scanner, but there aren’t many in the mobile realm that could boast of this feature. Still, it is not the most sought after feature in a cell phone like GPS or 3G support (which the Lenovo P960 clearly lacks with dual-band GSM and GPRS support). The P960 (not to be confused with the Samsung SGH-P960) has a big enough 2.8-inch touchscreen display and a passable 1.3 megapixel camera, but there are other features that could come in handy if you are a government agent or a mistrustful husband. Apart from the fingerprint scanner, the P960 also has a “VIP recording” feature that will record calls automatically from designated numbers for later perusal and unbound merriment. ”

As yet, there’s no specific information around this handset. Once we get more info and pricing we’ll let you know.

Nova Side Arm

Nova Side Arm

From the outset, all I can say is ‘it’s ugly’! Then again, rather than being an aesthetically pleasing consumer device this UMPC has been designed for industry. According to the Nova Mobility website target sectors include; Healthcare, military, medical services, parking management (don’t we just love them!),fleet management and production management.

The actual device kind of reminds me of the Panasonic CF-U1 although the Side Arm certainly looks trimmer. I’ll drop a link to the Nova site at the end of this post.

The specs are actually pretty impressive:

  • 800 x 480 7″ palm rejection touch screen
  • Intel Atom 1.1 GHz Z510 with US15W chipset
  • 1GB/2GB of RAM
  • 4GB disk on module, Micro SD card
  • 8GB/16GB/32GB DOM solid state storage optional per slot (2 slots)
  • 60/120GB HDD or 32/64GB SSD
  • PC express card
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • SD card slot
  • GPS
  • 802.11 a/b/g
  • Bluetooth V2.0
  • Up to 10 hours battery life

There’s also an optional 3G module for endless hours of browsing on the go (that is, if you like using an 800×480 resolution!) Like I said, this has been designed to cater for industrial use so don’t expect the latest and greatest in display technology. A really nice aspect to the Nova Side Arm is battery life - 10 hours according to Nova. Depending on the price, it might be worth buying a Side Arm as a personal device.

Lenovo Ideapad S9

Monday, August 11th, 2008 |

Lenovo Ideapad S9There are two models coming with Lenovo’s Atom based push into the netbook market -  the S9 is a 9″ model which be made for the Asian market and the S10 which is a 10″ version destined for the US. Even though the screen sizes differ, both models share the same chassis  - keeps the cost of manufacturing down.

The $399 price tag looks good - this fact alone should ensure the S9/10 has a welcome reception into what is fast becoming a very crowded market.

The Lenovo netbooks support up to 2Gb of RAM which should keep even the hungriest OS happy (read ‘Vista’!). Two flavours of hard drive as well - 80 Gb and 160 Gb platter disk.

On first impressions, the S9/10 actually looks like a very attractive netbook. Personally, I like the Lenovo hardware having used one of their laptops for about 9 months. Let’s hope this netbook offering is as robust and capable as its larger brothers.

Lenovo U8 to carry Intel Atom

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 |

Lenovo U8 IdeapadLenovo launched the U8 Ideapad back in April at the Intel’s IDF in Shanghai. Based on the keypad layout, 12 key numeric pad, I’d say the U8 Ideapad is aimed at both mobile phone users and technology fans alike.

The U8 Ideapad looks nice. Really nice. The Linux OS even has support for Microsoft Office applications which should appeal to business users and road warriors.

Specification:

  • Intel Atom CPU
  • 4.8″ touchscreen
  • optical mouse - allegedly, this will enable one-handed use
  • 3G, EDGE and GPS
  • integral web browser
  • front-mounted camera - for video calls
  • 4/6/10 Gb SSD

An official date for the UK launch hasn’t been announced yet but we expect to hear something in the next month or so.
