Dell netbook

Dell have finally gone official with their netbook. The device will be launched as the Inspiron 910 Mini 9 - I wonder if they paid a branding company to come up with that name!

There are three models available for the Inspiron netbook (and I have to admit that the pricing makes the Inspiron 910 netbook look it might capture a good chunk of the UMPC market). The following specs have been lifted directly from Dells site so there should be no debating what this new device will look like:

  • All models - 8.9″ 1024×600 display
  • 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU
  • USB, Mini card slots, Card Reader etc
  • RAM, OS, webcam and SSD all vary in size, depending on the version you buy - the lowest spec  starts at $349 and comes with 512MB of RAM, no camera, 4GB SSD, and Ubuntu (custom interface) apparently with a custom Dell interface. The next model costs $399 and has 512MB of RAM, 0.3MP webcam, 8GB SSD, and to cripple it you’ll get Windows XP Home. The most expensive model is $449 and has 1GB of RAM, 16GB SSD, 0.3MP webcam, and is also running Windows XP.
  • No Bluetooth as standard - that’ll cost you an extra $20.

Don’t forget that, in the Dell tradition, these are pre-configured netbooks. Using the Dell website, you can build the Inspiron 910 to suit your needs.

One last point, buy a buy a top or middle range model will give you savings of $55 and $40 respectively - this brings the XP version pricing in line with the Ubuntu model! I wonder if Dell have had a little nudge from Microsoft?

Dell Inspiron coming your way

Dell netbook

Looks like Gizmodo have more information on the Dell netbook, aka Inspiron 910. Rumours suggest that Dells netbook will drop into the UMPC market around 22nd August with a price tag of $299 (this figure hasn’t been confirmed yet).

The Inspiron 910 is reported to support SDD’s up to 16 Gb.

It also appears that Dell are going to give users a choice of OS - including Ubuntu.

Here’s the specs that Gizmodo are quoting:

  • Intel Atom N270 Diamondville 1.6 Ghz CPU
  • 1Gb DDR2 memory (max)
  • 3 x USB ports
  • 10/100 LAN, WLAN/WWAN
  • 0.3 - 1.3 Mega Pixels camera
  • Weight 2.2 lbs (just under a kilo)

The price seems pretty impressive although I have my doubts that the Inspiron 910 will drop in that low. As we all know, manufacturers have a habit of ‘leaking’ low prices in order to drum up interest.

Dell E gets new name

Dell netbook

Picked up some news over at UMPCWag - it looks like Dell have decided to rename their Dell E netbook to ‘Inspiron 910′. The information was ‘leaked’ via Brazilian website odontopalm.

The usual information is lacking; no release date, price or actual source has been revealed. A snippet of information suggests that the Dell netbook will feature 3G options so that’s something to look forward to.

It will be interesting to see if Dell can continue to follow their usual trend and keep the price low.

That’s all for now.

Dell E netbook specs

Monday, June 16th, 2008 |

Dell netbookDell have announced the specifications for the netbook.

A total of 3 versions are planned for launch with each model offering greater capabilities i.e. differing sizes for the SSD storage, webcam and bluetooth.

Dell have set a start price of $299. We don’t have the UK prices yet but we’ll update you when they are announced.

Expect to see the Dell E netbook launch in August.

Here’s the specification list that Dell have announced:

  • First PC for emerging markets and children, youth social networking/entertainment and holiday/coffee shop use.
  • Screen 8.9″ (1024 x 600)
  • 1.6Ghz Intel Diamondville CPU
  • HDD 4/8/16 Gb Flash
  • Memory 512Mb/1Gb
  • 0.3 Mpx camera
  • WiFi, WiMax, WWANand BT
  • Battery life ~5hours
  • OS Linux or Windows XP

An interesting note here. Dell’s main focus for sales is youth and emerging markets. However, looking at the pricing and specifications of the Dell E netbook I’d say this is a serious contender for Asus.

There are more images over at Engadget.

Dell ‘netbook’ coming soon.

Dell netbookAnother hardware company is joinint the bandwagon. Dell have announced their intention to release a ‘netbook’ - why can’t they all just stick to one, simple acronym?

The ‘netbook’ looks very similar to the Dell mini-Inspiron and, looking at the images, you’ll have a choice of two colours: red or black.

There has been no formal announcement on specifications or pricing. Realistically, in order to make any gain in a highly competitive market you would expect Dell’s ‘netbook’ to have pricing and features comparable to offerings from Asus, MSI and other vendors of UMPC’s.

One aspect that I will be keen to see is the processor. The Intel Atom is fast becoming seen as THE processor for UMPC’s (although AMD might argue that point). Hopefully Dell will take the hint.
