Eee Keyboard is coming

Asus Eee Keyboard

The Asus Eee Keyboard has been doing the rounds since about January but there’s now a firm releas date: August 09. For any of you living in a cave, here’s a some info on this curious piece of hardware. The Eee PC Keyboard is built from the guts of an Asus Eee PC netbook computer and housed in a keyboard. Pretty simple, eh? It does have a particularly nice touch - you don’t need a monitor. There is a touch screen on the right hand side rather than a screen at the top.

The idea behind the keyboard is that, rather than hooking up to your PC, you will connected via wireless to a HDTV. You can then control the television using the touch screen. Pretty cool.

Eee PC Ubuntu Installation

Want to install Ubuntu on you Eee PC netbook? The Asus range of netbooks has a pretty loyal following but many users simply aren’t happy with the UI that comes as default. Being an Ubuntu fan, and an Eee PC 1000 owner, I’ve been looking for a simple way to install Ubuntu. The lack of CD/DVD on the Eee 1000 has certainly not helped. If you’ve similar problems I’ve got the answer - Easy Peasy - an Ubuntu distro designed specifically for the Eee range. (more…)

Eee PC 1005HA…

…yet another netbook from Asus

Asus just can’t seem to help themselves right now - they’ve revealed two more models: 1005HA-M and 1005HA-H. Granted, these two new Eee PC variants have a lower spec (more on this below) than the Eee PC 1008HA but I think the company may be losing sight of their goals. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have a clue what Asus want; are they aiming to dominate every single niche in the netbook market? If so, pushing out 101 new models per year will not work. I want to understand why model X is better for me than model Z (apart from the obvious price tags). From my perspective, the Asus strategy (whatever it is) sucks. Yeah, I know they’ll no doubt say they are ‘…responding to market demand’! Enough of my perspective, here’s the brief… (more…)

Eee PC 1008 HA

Asus Eee PC 1008HA

Somehow, we nearly managed to miss this one - Asus are set to drop another ultra hin, low weight netbook into the UK market - the Eee PC 1008HA Seashell. Like the Eee PC S101, the Seashell has a 10in screen and is just 1in thick and weighs in at 2.4 pounds. A nice touch here is the inclusion of an Intel Atom N280 CPU (1.66GHz). There’s also plenty of memory and storage: 1GB of RAM and 170GB of hybrid storage, including a 160GB hard disk drive.

Asus Eee PC T91GO UMTS model

Eee PC T91 GO

The touchscreen Asus Eee PC GO series has been in the limelight for a while now but Asus have decided to go one step further and launch a UMTS version.

The ASUS Eee PC T91GO comes with the same spec as the first variant of the T91, but now features a builting 3G HSDPA modem option.

Although the final prices haven’t been announced yet, here’s and idea of what you’ll get when you part with your hard earned cash:

  • Convertible T91GO with an 8.9-inch touchscreen
  • Intel Atom Z520 processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 16GB SSD paired with a 16GB SD card
  • Dual USB 2.0 ports
  • Up to 5hrs battery life

In keeping with previous versions of the Eee PC netbooks, the T91GO weighs in at under 1Kg (0.96Kgs, to be precise). The obvious new component here is teh Eee PC Touch UI running on Windows XP Home Edition (why, oh why?) but it would be realistic to assume that future Linux variants will also come with this tech fitted. The GPS component is an optional extra on the PC T91GO but, as with other Eee PC models, you get 20GB of online Eee Storage bundled with the package.

Asus T91/T101H delayed

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 |

A lot of people have been getting really excited about the prospect of an Asus Eee touchscreen tablet after a number of sightings at CES. Unfortunately, it looks like fans are going to have to wait just a little longer before they get their hands on these new toys from Asus.

UMPCFever seems to suggest that a combination of factors have caused this slip in unveiling. These include a 3% - 4% dip in last quarter earnings and the economic downturn. Add in the ferocious competition going on in the netbook market and you can understand why Asus is twitchy about launching right now.

Ok, now for the good news; if you’re prepared to wait a little longer (as if you have any choice!), the T91 and T101H could be with us sometime in the second quarter of 2009.

Not the news you wanted to hear but, in the meantime, here’s an easy on the eye image of the Asus T91:

Asus S101 gets own site and release dates

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 |

The soon to be released Asus Eee S101 has been given it’s own, dedicated webpage. Head on over here to find a range of videos and images of the so-called MacBook Air killer. One of the more important pieces of info on the site is the official release date gotten its own official press page - look on the right hand side of the landing page where you’ll see ‘S101 launch schedule’ then hover your mouse over this link to pop out page with all the info you need. There’s no date there for the UK but I’m assuming they should be here about now, inline with European launch dates.

One of the more interesting videos suggests the Asus S101 runs almost silent with 5 hours of battery life - very nice, if it’s true. Unfortunately Asus have decided to continue shipping their netbooks with 0.3 Mpxs camera!

Asus S101 gets reviewed

Asus Eee PC S101

The Asus S101 has only just been launched but it looks like mobilecomputermag are way ahead of the curve with this review. They’ve also got a huge selection of images for Asus fans to drool over.

Here’s some of the highlights from the S101 review:

  • Price £449 - or there abouts
  • 32GB SSD with the Linux variant and 16Gb with Windows
  • At just under 1.1kg, it’s lighter than both the Eee PC 1000 and even the Eee PC 901
  • The S101’s keyboard is identical to that on the Eee PC 1000 – same width, same key shape and size, same amount of travel
  • A large touchpad, colour-matched to the lid, sitting in the expanse of brushed metal wrist-rest seemed to catch the reviewers eye
  • Battery life - 3 hours and forty-five minutes under heavy load, and just over five hours in light-use

All in all, the reviewers over at mobilecomputingmag gave this latest netbook a big thumbs up. Ok, it’s a little pricey for a netbook but you remember that this is a high end device - if you want quality expect to pay for it.

Asus Eee PC Touchscreen

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 |

The have been rumours circulating about a touchscreen Eee PC since early this but so far nothing has surfaced. It looks like the rumour is going into overtime once again with Asus reportedly preparing a touchscreen variant of its netbook range. No specifics yet but a number of sites are suggesting that we’ll see one of these new devices hitting the market sometime in Q1 2009. Other eagerly anticipated extras include the dual core Intel Atom (although I think this could be earlier than next year), 3G capabilities and WiMAX.

Personally, I’d be very interested in seeing a touchscreen version of the forthcoming Asus Eee PC S101 - the so called MacBook Air killer. Adding a touchscreen to this device would surely give Asus a big boost in the netbook market.

And what about Apple? It wouldn’t surprise me to see Apple entering the netbook sector in the near future - missing out on the opportunity to cream some cash out of a highly lucractive area whilst pushing deeper market penetration of OS X is just what Jobs and co need.

Asus to launch MacBook Air ‘killer’

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 |

The PC manufacturer Asus have decided it’s time to take on Apple in the super-slim computer market. The new Eee PC S101 is said to be a much cheaper alternative to the hugely popular MacBook Air and, according to Asus has a better spec.

Here’s what’s on offer:

  • Intel Atom processor
  • Intel 945 Express (GMA 950) graphics
  • 10.2-inch screen (1,024 x 768)
  • 3 x USB ports
  • built-in 4-in-1 card reader
  • Ethernet port
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Battery life of about five hours
  • weight - under a kilo
  • 18-25mm thick plus multitouch trackpad.

The S101 will come in two flavours - crappy old Windows XP Home versions (16GB SSD), with two Linux versions featuring 32GB or 64GB of SSD. Following in the Asus tradition of not quite giving the users all they want you’ll find the S101 fitted with a 0.3-megapixel webcam!

The S101 will be available in a range of colours to suit all, well, just about all. The latest Eee PC should be with us in November with a rumoured price tag of about £449. Not as cheap as my Akoya mini, which I really like. We’ll test run it when we get hold of the S101.
