iPhone 3G first look.
As you may know Apple have announced some details of the forthcoming iPhone 3G release. In the meantime, I’ve been having a more indepth look at the specifications.
Let me say that the advances are huge. Apple has really pushed the boat out with the latest release of the iPhone with adding capabilities that will appeall to both everyday users and businesses alike.
Let’s check it out.
The most notable change is connection method. Out goes EDGE and in comes 3G HSDPA which gives you something close to WiFi speeds. Apple have also added GPS to the iPhone 3G. The handset will use GPS, mobile phone masts and wifi to generate location information down to street level. This is a massive improvement over some handsets - my Blackberry gives me a location ‘pinpointed’ to within 1.7km!
The handset Operating System will be upgraded to version 2.0 when the iPhone 3G is released on July 11th. Don’t worry if you want to hold onto your current iPhone - Apple will make the upgrade freely available to users of iPhone EDGE. iPod Touch users will need to pay $9.95 to receive the upgrade (it’s hardly going to break the bank). Here’s a few of the new features found in the iPhone 3G software:
- mass email management
- contact searching
- inclusion of App Store - this will allow you to wirelessly download free and paid applications
- Enterprise features including VPN and Microsoft Exchange server connectivity
